I picked up a 1997 Toyota Land Cruiser 80 Series — 40th Anniversary Edition. The 80 Series is widely considered one of Toyota’s best off-road platforms ever made. The 40th Anniversary is a limited production variant with factory locking front and rear differentials, upgraded interior, and a few cosmetic touches that set it apart.
Powered by the 1FZ-FE — Toyota’s 4.5L inline-six. Not the fastest engine in the world, but famously bulletproof. These engines run well past 300,000 miles with proper maintenance, and the simplicity of a naturally aspirated straight-six means less to go wrong.
I go snowboarding regularly — mostly SoCal mountains but also Mammoth, Big Bear, and trips to Utah and Colorado. The 80 Series handles winter mountain conditions better than anything else I could buy for the money: full-time 4WD, solid front and rear axles, factory locking differentials, and enough cargo space for two people’s boards and gear.
